Job Title: Intermediate Underwater Acoustic Analyst

Location: Port Moody, BC, Canada

Dynamic Ocean Consulting Ltd. is a boutique environmental consulting firm based in Port Moody, British Columbia. We are a group of multi-disciplinary applied scientists that bridge the realms of regulatory and academic applied scientists, with a focus on the marine environment. We believe strongly in the inclusion of western and Indigenous/Inuit sciences into all aspects of the regulatory life cycle, to support the understanding of existing conditions and effects assessments. Responsibilities

  • Work with senior staff to design baseline underwater acoustic studies and lead their implementation in the field.
  • Participate in field programs to determine existing conditions, support compliance monitoring or work on research projects.
  • Manage and/or prepare reports including data analysis/interpretation, consolidation of desktop information, and management of field data.
  • Prepare environmental effects documents to target the mandate of the respective regulatory authority.
  • Mentor and support junior staff.
  • Support to the development of construction environmental management plans for impacts related to Underwater Sound.
  • Design and implementation of underwater sound management plans.
  • Understanding of regulatory compliance commitments for acoustic monitoring through Fisheries and Oceans Canada requirements considered an asset.
  • Analysis and interpretation of passive acoustic data, including measurements of sound levels and bioacoustic analyses.
  • Travel as required to support local and remote field programs.

 

Qualifications and Experience

  • Minimum of three years of experience with acoustic analysis software, such as packages and custom scripts in Matlab, Python, or R, and experience using bioacoustic analysis software such as Raven Pro and PAMGuard; five years considered an asset.
  • Experience conducting acoustic propagation modelling for small and large scale projects using either customs scripts (e.g., Matlab or Python) or using propagation modelling software considered an asset;
  • Experience collecting acoustic data in the field, including programming and maintaining acoustic recorders, designing moorings and deployment strategies, and working on deployments and recoveries of acoustic recorders or other oceanographic equipment.
  • Undergraduate degree in a related field (Biology, Ocean Science, Environmental Science, etc), with a Masters preferred.
  • Registered Professional Biologist designation with the College of Applied Biologists (or designated as a Biologist in Training) is considered an asset.
  • Experience in the identification of marine mammals typical in coastal British Columbia, experience with coastal marine mammals of Nunavut is considered an asset. Both visual and bioacoustic identification considered an asset.
  • Experience working in the regulatory environment with specific experience developing acoustic management plans that are aligned with the mandate of Fisheries and Oceans Canada – Fish and Fish Habitat Protection Program (DFO-FFHPP) is considered an asset.
  • Ability to multi-task and adapt to conditions in fast-paced environment.
  • A positive attitude and interest to communicate and engage with the team.
  • Communication skills for verbal and written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in statistical analysis programs such as R is considered an asset.
  • Experience in digital mapping programs such as QGIS and ArcGIS is considered an asset.
  • An interest to expand your professional experience portfolio and grow with our organization.

Salary Range

$70,000 to $90,000 depending on experience.

Work Location and Benefits

Our office is Port Moody based and we offer a hybrid work schedule opportunity with two to three days a week in our office. We do have satellite offices in Victoria and Cumberland and for the right candidate, remote work on Vancouver Island could be negotiated.
