Meet with your Friends

Many different opportunities are available to meet old friends and find new ones in AVE. Want to talk with friends during breaks between sessions? The ASA Virtual Technology Task Force has arranged for the use of Gather.Town for social networking.  There are also Chat Rooms that are available on the meeting platform which provide for text chats.

Gather.town is a video chat platform that has avatars move around a map. As you get close to other avatars, your video’s will pop up and you will be able to chat. By moving your avatar around using the arrow keys on your keyboard, you can have spontaneous conversations with those around you. These can be either one-on-one or small groups depending on how many people are around you.   Links to Gather.town and the Chat Lounges will be provided here.  In the mean time, take this tour of Gather.town and the Chat Lounge.

ASA Socials

The ASA Student Council is hosting three social events during AVE. All three of these events will be held on Monday, 7 December, via Zoom.  The first event is New Student Orientation, which will take place 6:00 p.m.—6:30 p.m. (EST). The next event, the Student Meet and Greet will be held 6:30 p.m.—7:30 p.m. (EST). This event will include Acoustics Trivia in breakout rooms with prizes going to the teams who score the highest. Following trivia, there will be time for student social discussion via their teams' breakout rooms. The final student event is the Student Social, scheduled for 7:30 p.m.—8:30 p.m. (EST). The Student Social will include 1-minute student presentations as a part of the “Poster Slam” as well as an “Introduce Your Pet” event (a separate sign-up email will be sent for these events). Finally, the student social will provide time for students to introduce themselves and get to know one another via breakout rooms. Follow the student twitter throughout the meeting @ASAStudents.

Aviara Trio

The ASA Society Social and Music event
is scheduled for Wednesday, 9 December at 6:30 p.m. (EST). This live event has two fantastic parts. For the first half hour, The Aviara Trio  will play a short concert of varied and appealing pieces. A brief question and answer segment about their music and instruments is included. For the next hour, join other conference attendees for a session of fun virtual games and for the chance to win prizes! Test your acoustics knowledge. Cheer on your favorite teams. Connect with fellow attendees. Altogether this will be a fun social event after the Plenary and before the amazing ASA Jam.

The Jam

The Jam Subcommittee planned it all out – the ASA Jam will happen Wednesday night, 8pm -midnight (EST)! There are two online platforms for ASA members to share recorded music that they have written and/or performed in an effort to facilitate virtual interaction and sharing. Any type of music is welcome for the virtual Jam, in video or audio format, from the past or present, provided that it is a work by or includes an ASA member in the recording. The material can be audio or video, but must be submitted in video format (see below). These platforms will be open for submissions and viewing by ASA members only, for an indefinite period.

Refer to the ASA Virtual Jam Guide containing:

•Instructions to access the sharing platforms
•FAQ about the virtual music sharing
•Resources for improving the quality of your recordings
•Instructions for formatting videos or audio to video conversion for the platforms.

Please take this opportunity to make recordings or look through your archives for things to share.  We eagerly anticipate hearing many new things that we cannot accommodate or accomplish at the in-person Jam on these new platforms.
