The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University

The Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) at Penn State University is an integral part of one of the leading research universities in the nation. ARL supports national security, economic competitiveness, and quality of life through Education; Scientific discovery; Technology demonstration; and Transition to application. As a designated University Affiliated Research Center (UARC), ARL conducts essential research, development, and systems engineering in support of our nations priorities free from conflict of interest or competition with commercial industry.

The Communications, Information and Navigation Office (CINO) at the Applied Research Laboratory (ARL) is looking for motivated and talented engineers to join our Sensors and Signal Processing Department, part of the Autonomy and Intelligent Systems Division.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to conducting signal processing and machine learning research and analysis using underwater acoustic sensors and system Data.

Experience with the following is required:

• Matlab

• Python

• C and/or C++

Experience with the following is preferred:

• Adaptive beamforming

• Active signal design

• Matched filter processing

• Passive narrowband and broadband signal detection

• Background noise estimation

• Machine learning

• Design and execution of testing procedures

• Environmental acoustics

• Underwater acoustic simulation tools.

Educational Requirements:

Typically, requires a Bachelor's degree or higher in an Engineering or Science discipline and two (2) years of experience for a level 2. Additional experience and/or education and competencies are required for higher level jobs.

A Master's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or Acoustics Engineering or an equivalent combination of education and/or experience is preferred.

Travel will be required to support local testing and attend meetings.
