Ph.D. and terminal M.A. program in Linguistics
University of Kansas
The Department of Linguistics at the University of Kansas welcomes applications for our Ph.D. program and our terminal M.A. program, for Fall 2024.
The KU Linguistics Department trains students in data-driven linguistic research, balancing experimental and fieldwork methodologies to make discoveries in phonetics, phonology, syntax, psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, first language acquisition, second language acquisition, semantics, sociolinguistics, and the study of languages indigenous to North America, Mesoamerica, and Africa.
Our research is housed in one of seven laboratories on campus, which are equipped with top-of-the-line equipment and workspaces. Our facilities also include an anechoic chamber for pristine phonetic recordings.
Our Ph.D. candidates are fully funded for five years, usually through teaching and research assistantships. We also offer support for research and conference expenses.
Funding may be available for terminal M.A. students.
Our Ph.D. graduates have a high level of success after completion, with 72% in long-term academic employment (tenure-track or renewable multi-year), and 13% conducting research in industry.
Questions can be addressed to linguistics@ku.edu. In addition, we will be hosting two virtual meetings about our program. Join in either session to meet and engage with our faculty, and chat with current PhD students.
Session 1: Monday, October 23, 3pm-4pm CST.
Session 2: Wednesday, October 25, 8-9am CST.
