BASIC FUNCTION:
Provide engineering support to maintain and operate major laboratories located in the Department of Ocean Engineering, including associated test equipment.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Perform custom engineering of departmental laboratory equipment and experiments, including mechanical, electrical, and software system components.
Maintain and operate shared departmental laboratory resources, including wave maker, ship’s model testing tank, towing carriage, and acoustic test tank.
Manage and maintain the Ocean Engineering/Oceanography Teaching and Design Laboratories.
Perform custom engineering design and fabrication for acoustic transducers, underwater vehicles, and surface vehicles.
Assist in undergraduate and graduate laboratory teaching sessions by instructing students in the operation of laboratory equipment.
Supervise/instruct graduate and undergraduate students in the use of laboratory equipment.
Ensure safe procedures are followed for general laboratory use.
Maintain equipment and perform inventory control in undergraduate workspaces and departmental workspaces.
Advise on improvements and enhancements to Ocean Engineering’s research facilities, and the need for equipment enhancements, updates, or other necessary changes.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Support unmanned underwater and surface vehicle development, deployment, and maintenance.
Perform additional duties as required.
LICENSES, TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT:
Personal computers, printers; word processing, database, spreadsheet software; LabView, Matlab, and solid modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks); machine tools.

Required Qualifications: REQUIRED:
1. Bachelor’s degree in ocean engineering, naval architecture, marine engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field.
2. Minimum one year of professional experience with general engineering laboratory equipment and data acquisition systems.
3. Minimum one year of professional experience with electronics and instrumentation.
4. Demonstrated strong interpersonal and verbal communication skills.
5. Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
6. Demonstrated supervisory experience.
7. Demonstrated ability to work with diverse groups/populations.

Preferred Qualifications: PREFERRED:
1. Master’s degree in ocean engineering, naval architecture, marine engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, or related field.
2. Demonstrated experience with ocean-based laboratories (e.g., towing tank, wave tank, acoustic tank, etc.) and/or field experience with vehicles (e.g., unmanned underwater vehicles, surface vehicles, research vessel operations, etc.)
3. Demonstrated familiarity with LabView, Matlab, and solid modeling software (e.g., SolidWorks).
4. Demonstrated experience with machine tools and prototype construction.
