Modeling and Acoustics Postdoc
What You Will Do
Are you ready to begin a career in modeling and acoustics? The Acoustics and Sensors Team (MPA-11) is looking for a postdoctoral researcher with strong computational skills and solid background in finite element analysis. We are seeking a highly-motivated individual to join a multidisciplinary research team and contribute to the development of a new acoustic inspection technology for LANL-specific large, complex composite systems. This work involves highly integrated numerical modeling and experimental efforts.
Ongoing work in our team includes applied research for material characterization (solids, liquids, & gases), acoustical imaging, nonlinear acoustics, acoustic separation of two‐phase systems, detection of corrosion and other defects in materials, acoustically engineered materials. The work involves development of new techniques, customized instrumentation, and validation of measurements in the field. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the development of new sensing technologies, patents, and publications. There will be opportunities to work in a wide range of areas, to innovate, and present work to sponsors and conferences.
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
You will need to have a strong background in one or more areas: Signal processing, Advanced data analysis, Finite Element analysis, Ultrasonic techniques, Nondestructive testing, Machine learning.
This role requires a strong background in COMSOL or other Finite Element code, and willingness to learn COMSOL. Additionally, fluency in one or more Computer Programming Languages is required (e.g., Matlab, Python, VB, C, LabView, etc.).
Research & Experimentation
You will need hands-on experience in designing and conducting experiments. Additionally, you need demonstrated experience in conducting original scientific research through peer reviewed publication record.
For this role you must have the ability to obtain a Q clearance, which typically requires U.S. citizenship.
Education/Experience: A PhD in Applied Physics, Engineering, Material Science or related fields, completed within the last five years or soon to be completed.
Electronics & Instruments
Knowledge of electronics and of typical laboratory test instruments, such as function generators, oscilloscopes, and piezoelectric transducers.
Ability to adapt to new requirements for projects and be flexible enough to learn new areas of research as needed.
