Marine Acoustics Postdoctoral Scholar – Marine Science Institute JPF01468
The Valentine Lab at UC Santa Barbara in collaboration with the Weber Lab at the University of New Hampshire seek a Postdoctoral Researcher in the area of ocean acoustics to lead in the development and execution of a state- funded hydrocarbon seep acoustic observatory.
The observatory will be located in a natural oil and gas seep offshore UC Santa Barbara, and will involve continuous monitoring of oil and gas seepage using a high-frequency (150-250 kHz) side-looking echo sounder mounted to an offshore structure. The Postdoctoral Researcher will work closely with the Principal Investigators and other project personnel to design, deploy, and monitor the system, as well as to interpret, present, and publish the findings.
Basic Qualifications: PhD in acoustics, oceanography, ocean engineering, or closely related discipline at the time of application.
Additional Qualifications: A minimum 2 years of academic or applied research experience in analysis of acoustic data.
-A minimum 2 years of academic or applied research experience in marine science;
-An interest and track record in publishing in top academic journals;
-Ability to balance a diverse portfolio of responsibilities simultaneously;
-Excellent communication skills to contribute to technical reports and peer-reviewed scientific publications, deliver presentations, and translate scientific concepts for diverse audiences;
-Strong interpersonal skills to build and maintain strong relationships with academic, and government partners; -Record of research at sea.
This is a 100% time appointment. The duration of the initial appointment is 12 months; reappointment for an additional year(s) is possible depending on performance. Start date is negotiable but ideally would be April 2019 or sooner. Salary is competitive, commensurate with the applicant’s qualifications.
