Shen Milsom & Wilke is seeking talented Acoustical Consultant for our San Francisco office.  The Consultant will work on a diverse range of high-profile projects by conducting field measurements, building acoustical computer models, and consulting on solutions to optimize acoustical performance and mitigate unwanted noise and vibration.

Ideal candidate would be experienced in acoustical consulting, acoustical engineering with a thorough understanding of acoustic principles and real-world application of building and environmental acoustics. The candidate must possess expertise with sound and vibration test equipment and the ability to measure and analyze the impact of noise and vibration from interior and exterior sources.  You will be responsible for field noise and vibration measurements, data analysis and evaluation.  Design capabilities in numerous vertical markets, including education, healthcare, government, commercial and hospitality, is a must.

Project management experience to include multi-discipline coordination in an architectural design environment is a plus.  Essential quality and experience include mentoring staff, maintaining and continuing to build on a strong heritage of client service and management.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Acoustical Design: Provide acoustical consulting in architectural & mechanical acoustics, audiovisual systems & environmental noise control and vibration isolation projects.
  • Manage all aspects of your assigned projects and work closely with each discipline in the development of projects from beginning to end, focusing on budget, scheduling, design, client and consultant communication and coordination.
  • Collect and analyze noise and vibration data. Perform calculations and site surveys/construction administration.
  • Prepare reports, memorandums to communicate acoustical project issues.
  • Development and design of project drawings in AutoCAD/BIM, EASE and Sound Plan.
  • Manage a team of acoustical and technology staff and provide mentorship to aid in grown and development.
  • Play an integral role in the systems implementation process, acting as the primary point of contact between the systems vendor, the project team, and the client to ensure a successful implementation
  • Interact with systems vendors to negotiate contract bids and awards.
  • Assist in preparation of marketing materials and presentations, cultivating active and potential client relationships. Experience in marketing and business development
  • Serve as a technical resource for others throughout the firm, providing thought leadership and subject matter expertise.
  • Develop a working knowledge of the various disciplines to facilitate and increase in overall knowledge of the SM&W business.
  • Serve to take ownership of the Acoustical department within the Chicago office, working closely with the director and partner in the office.
  • Up to 10-15% domestic and international travel will be required.

Skills and Qualifications:

  • 8+ years’ experience
  • BS in Acoustics, Physics, or other engineering degree.
  • INCE certification preferred
  • Strong knowledge of Architectural drawing and technology.
  • Fully proficient in most recent version of EASE and Sound Plan preferred.
  • Fully proficient in most recent version of AutoCAD, BIM, EASE and Sound Plan.
  • Competency in Microsoft Suite

Are you interested in metamaterials and their potential to improve people's living conditions?  The Acoustics Research Centre at the University of Auckland is inviting applications from highly motivated students to participate in an exciting new research programme on acoustics and mechanical metamaterials for radically improving sound insulation.

Funded PhD and Masters by Research studentships are available which include tuition fees, a stipend, and support for research-related activities such as consumables and travel.

The research

In a world of population densification, increased traffic flows and high power home entertainment systems, noise pollution at home and in workplaces is becoming a large problem. It can result in annoyance, loss of concentration, disturbed sleep and reduced productivity. We are also realising that a loss of acoustic privacy in dwellings is sensed as a loss as important as a loss of visual or spatial privacy.

Mechanical, that is acoustic and elastic, metamaterials are able to achieve extra-ordinary properties that go beyond (”meta”) those of their constituent materials. This is an opportunity to create systems with previously impossible vibro-acoustic performance.

Research topics within this programme include the development of new, more compact acoustic metamaterials based on Helmholtz resonators for very low frequencies; of new mechanical metamaterials that suppress bending waves in the coincidence frequency region; of computational intelligence techniques and generative design of metamaterials; innovation in acoustic metamaterials for integration into double-glazed window systems; and translation to industrial scale.

Novel acoustic insulation systems materials are an expected outcome of this research, with considerable potential for commercialisation.

The candidates

The project will suit driven, ambitious candidates interested in mechanical metamaterials and their practical applications.

We are looking for strong backgrounds in some combination of acoustics, engineering, physics, computational science or a suitably related field.

Skills in computational modelling and simulation of vibro-acoustic systems would be a big plus. Alternatively, strong skills in the experimental measurement of complex vibro-acoustic behaviours and signal processing would be highly desirable. Good written and oral communication skills in English.

Senior Acoustical Consultant

AKRF, Inc. is seeking to add a senior acoustical consultant to its New York City acoustics, noise and vibration group. Applicants should have 5 to 10 years experience and be self-motivated, innovative, highly driven, and have the desire work on a wide range of acoustics, noise and vibration projects related to environmental sources (e.g., transportation, industry, energy, infrastructure, etc.); construction; architectural, structural, and MEP systems review; and interior design. Responsibilities would be project management, acoustics/noise/vibration field measurements, acoustical computer modeling (TNM, FTA, CadnaA, INSUL, EASE), reviewing architectural/MEP/structural drawings, HVAC ductwork and equipment noise calculations, vibration isolation recommendations, engineering calculations, and recommending practical design solutions. Additional experience with Environmental Assessments and Environmental Impact Statements, the CEQR Technical Manual, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development noise standards, and Noise (E) designations with the New York City Mayor’s Office of Environmental Remediation would be beneficial.

This position involves conducting research in a wide range of environmental acoustic areas including sound and noise source measurements, general and specialized modeling, soundscape and transportation noise visualizations, and outdoor warning system design. Current research areas include noise source characterization of military aircraft and rockets, long-range sound propagation modeling, and operational noise reduction studies. Responsibilities involve applied acoustical research as well as interacting with clients, noise analysis modeling, and technical reporting.


Skills – Applicants must be team oriented, have excellent oral and written communication skills, and enjoy working in a high-energy environment.
