Chair in Large Whale Conservation (Assistant Professor)

The Canadian Wildlife Federation will fund a Chair in Large Whale Conservation.

We are seeking candidates who will conduct research on the quantification of the impacts of environmental variability, including climate change, on the populations and distribution of large whale species, using a variety of approaches (sea-going, empirical and modelling) to foster a mechanistic understanding of distributional patterns, demographic variation and foraging ecology. Preference will be given to candidates who use and develop modern tools and analytical approaches to quantify and predict whale movement, distribution, and oceanographic habitat associations, such as remote sensing and acoustic detection technologies. At-sea experience with physical and biological oceanographic studies and experience with evidence-based advice to influence conservation policy are assets.

Ideally, the candidate will have a PhD in biological oceanography or related discipline focused on large whales, postdoctoral experience, a strong publication record, a history of successful funding applications and mentoring experience.

A demonstrated ability to collaborate with national and international academic, governmental, non-governmental and industrial agencies and a strong record of public outreach are desirable.

Ultrasound Faculty – Assistant Professor

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience: We are seeking applicants at the Assistant Professor level with expertise in quantitative ultrasound research thematically focused on parameters derived from the backscattered echo signal, elasticity imaging techniques (in particular shear wave elasticity imaging), and molecular imaging with ultrasound.

It is expected that the successful applicant will have a broad knowledge base in ultrasound physics and ultrasound imaging systems, including:efficient methods for data acquisition using clinical imaging systems,signal processing strategies for minimum bias and variance in power spectral estimation, the approximations used in much of quantitative ultrasound, how those approximations are often violated, and strategies to test those approximations and mitigate their impact on parameter estimation,extensive experience with relevant laboratory acoustics equipment for materials characterization, basic methods for using ultrasound contrast agents including targeting for theranostics and molecular tagging for monitoring physiological function.

Position Summary:

The Department of Medical Physics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has a rewarding opportunity for a tenure track faculty position to focus on ultrasound physics.  We seek an individual who has a particular interest in quantitative ultrasound research thematically focused on parameters derived from the backscattered echo signal, elasticity imaging techniques (in particular shear wave elasticity imaging), and molecular imaging with ultrasound. The selected candidate will collaborate closely with researchers in Medical Physics, in particular the Quantitative Ultrasound Lab, whose expertise in acoustics theory, experimental techniques, and development and calibration of phantoms for testing these techniques as a resource for scientific exploration with a broad range of potential applications.

PhD scholarship in Coded Ultrasound Imaging

DTU

Location: Lyngby Denmark

A 3-year PhD scholarship is available at the Center for Fast Ultrasound Imaging (CFU), Department of Health Technology from August 2020 sponsored by the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) and the Department of Health Technology at DTU. It is conducted in collaboration between CFU and the MEMS group at DTU Health Tech, the University of Copenhagen, and the Copenhagen University Hospital (Rigshospitalet) in the ERC Synergy Grant “3-D Super resolution Ultrasound Real time imaging of Erythrocytes” – SURE.

The SURE project develops and researches a new super resolution ultrasound imaging method capable of resolving 3-D capillary flow in the human body. The approach tracks the motion of the individual red blood cells (erythrocytes) in a three-dimensional volume for a full visualization of anatomy, flow, and perfusion. The approach can potentially yield a paradigm shift in the scientific study, diagnoses, and treatment of cancer, diabetes, and vascular diseases using ultrasound, as it enables the possibility of volumetrically visualizing capillary perfusion in real-time at frame rates above 20 Hz without injection of contrast agents. This can also result in much more detailed image than is currently possible with ultrasound.

Responsibilities and tasks

This PhD project develops coded imaging schemes for acquiring 3-D ultrasound volumes using advanced codes to increase the penetration depth and frame rate. The project includes performing a range of phantom and animal experiments to develop and refine the SURE algorithms.

The research is conducted in a truly multi-disciplinary environment consisting of the four academic partners specializing in advanced ultrasound imaging, silicon CMUT probes, animal experiments, and clinical investigations, and the main purpose is to translate the SURE method from a research idea to the clinic.

The main task is to develop suitable ultrasound coded 3-D imaging schemes using row-column matrix arrays fabricated as capacitive micro-machined ultrasound transducers (CMUT). The project seeks to enhance the penetration depth and volumetric frame rate of the 3-D imaging schemes, when taking into account the limitations in peak pressure, intensity and probe heating. The coding schemes investigated include chirp excitation, Hadamard encoding, and spread spectrum imaging. They are implemented on our research scanners for investigation in a laboratory environment. They will finally be clinically evaluated in human trials conducted together with the Department of Radiology at Rigshospitalet to reveal efficacy.

Qualifications
Candidates should have a two-year master’s degree (120 ECTS points) or a similar degree with an academic level equivalent to a two-year master’s degree. Experience with digital signal processing is desirable. Similarly, knowledge of medical imaging and acoustics will also be beneficial.
