The Acoustics Design Engineer is responsible for designing and developing innovative new products in the field of acoustics. Areas of focus would include the Tunable Acoustic Panel, Acoustical Banners, VAE-Rehearsal System, and the Transcend Active Acoustic System.

Job Description:

1. Evaluate customer requirements and engage in engineering product design utilizing knowledge of acoustic and mechanical engineering principles.

2. Design products within acoustic panels, acoustical banners, portable acoustic shells, modular sound-isolating practice rooms, and active acoustic products.

3. Perform system design for all phases of active acoustic projects in various music rehearsal and performing arts venues.

4. Assist with programming and tuning active acoustic systems.

5. Conduct acoustic field measurements and on-site product assessment. Manage and operate company’s acoustical and electronics laboratories, including specification and maintenance of data acquisition software and test equipment.

6. Project leadership to develop detailed customer requirements and corresponding product functional requirements in collaboration with the Product Manager and field visits.

7. Effectively leader multifunctional project teams both individually and collectively to help accomplish the goals of the project and stimulate growth of the team’s capabilities.

8. Stimulate generation and development of effective ideas for new products, product improvements and cost reductions in order to provide the best possible product for our customers

9. Conduct the engineering analysis with respect to strength calculations, design layout, fits and tolerances and modeling as required

10. Conduct accelerated product life cycle tests and evaluates field testing and potential misuse of all products in order to provide a long and safe service life for the end user

11. Provide complete, documented product and engineering specifications, working closely with Engineering Services, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Manager, Unit Manager, Industrial Engineer, Planner and Quality Control.

12. Provides support for development of new manufacturing processes

13. Prepares recommendations with supporting logic for product changes that will improve sales potential and/or reduce cost

14. Provides technical writing support and editing of service manuals, assembly and operating instructions 15. Coordinates and executes with other departments product development tasks including:

• Product design including necessary calculations (FEA)

• Design Reviews

• Peer Reviews

• Design Validation

• Design Failure Modes and Effects Analysis (DFMEA)

• Design for Manufacturability

• Design Cost Analysis

• Prototype Development

• Accelerated product life cycle tests (including environmental testing)

• Design specification development – engineering specifications

• Early concept development documentation for Engineering Services

• Preproduction support

• Field testing (beta sites)

• Materials acquisition

• Tooling acquisition

Minimum Qualifications:

• Passion for acoustics

• Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering, Acoustical Engineering, EE or closely-related field of study, or equivalent experience

• Five (5) years of progressive product engineering experience is preferred

• Proficiency with computer aided design (CAD) software (SolidWorks preferred)

• Knowledge of analytical acoustical tools such as CATT, EASERA, ODEON, etc. preferred

• Knowledge of sound system configuration tools such as Audio Architect, Q-YS, CueStation, etc. preferred

• Knowledge of sound system components, functions and design implementations preferred

• Proficiency with finite element analysis software (FEA) and stress calculations

• Knowledge of the basic materials and processes used in industry with emphasis on new technology developments

• Ability to conceptualize, formulate design possibilities and coordinate development by the project team under time and financial constraints

• Commitment to effective project leadership, coordination and evaluation, with recommendations for changes required to improve overall results

• Music background preferred

• Travel is required

Ecology and Environment, Inc. is seeking a full time Marine Acoustician. This position will be responsible for marine acoustic propagation modeling associated with take estimation and marine acoustic research. Our successful candidate will be proficient in several types of models including parabolic, normal, and/or ray tracing software. This is a national position that can work from any of the company’s domestic office locations.   

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct marine acoustic propagation modeling for stationary and mobile noise sources in varied oceanic environments and integrate with statutory requirements and associated regulations
  • Assist with noise-related impact assessments and take estimation analyses for marine organisms
  • Conduct and/or interpret marine noise monitoring, research, and analyses
  • Support with report writing and preparation of environmental documentation/analyses and permit requests

Requirements:

  • Master’s Degree in Oceanography, Engineering, or related discipline
  • 5+ years of experience in modeling acoustic propagation of sound sources in marine environments
  • Experience with evaluation of impacts of noise on marine organisms
  • Experience with models including parabolic, normal, and/or ray tracing options; proficiency with RAM modeling code required
  • Familiarity with NOAA Fisheries acoustic criteria for protected marine species, and the principles of underwater acoustics including attenuation, transmission loss, and methods to determine Zones of Influence
  • Experience preparing environmental documents for submission to NOAA Fisheries, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Agency, the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, U.S. Department of Energy, or Bureau of Ocean Energy Management a plus
  • Excellent verbal communication, technical writing, and research skills
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office and Matlab
  • Ability to travel to support business needs
  • Experience working in Latin America and Spanish/Portuguese language skills a plus

The Graduate Program in Acoustics at The Pennsylvania State University invites applications for a tenure-line faculty position in acoustics. The position is open at the Associate Professor level, although exceptionally well qualified applicants at all levels may be considered. The Program seeks candidates with research expertise in acoustics from any sub-discipline and an ability to teach acoustics at the graduate level is essential. Research areas of interest for the position include, but are not limited to, transducers and biomedical ultrasound. The goal of this search is to identify the strongest candidate regardless of specialization.

The Graduate Program in Acoustics is one of the world’s premier resources in acoustics education and research, and it was established in 1965. There are currently 48 Acoustics faculty members from Penn State who contribute to the missions of teaching, research, and service. The Program offers the M.Eng., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in acoustics. There are over 50 resident Acoustics graduate students at the University Park campus, and over 80 students who are seeking M.Eng. degrees through the distance learning option. The Acoustics Program is administratively aligned with the Department of Aerospace Engineering in the Penn State College of Engineering, but maintains separate curricula, examinations, space, and budgets. Penn State Acoustics also maintains a strong relationship with the Penn State Applied Research Laboratory (ARL), a university center of excellence in defense science, systems, and technologies with a focus on naval missions and related areas. The Acoustics Program also supports the Penn State Center for Acoustics and Vibration (CAV) that serves as a base for technology transfer to industry in the many sub-disciplines of acoustics and vibration. Penn State Acoustics faculty members are also involved with the Materials Research Institute, the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences, the Penn State Institutes of Energy and the Environment, the Social, Life, and Engineering Sciences Imaging Center, or have collaborations with the College of Medicine. The University is one of the nation’s leaders in industry-sponsored research, with partnerships with over 400 companies on an annual basis.

Qualifications: Applicants shall hold a Ph.D. or equivalent in acoustics, engineering, science, or closely related areas at the time of beginning their Penn State appointment. Candidates will be expected to engage in graduate level instruction both in the fundamentals of acoustics and in their area of expertise. In parallel, all candidates are expected to establish an externally funded research program, supporting graduate students, and to publish in high quality academic journals.
