NCE is looking for an entry-level, eager and talented candidate to perform finite element analyses of marine structures as well as other acoustical and vibration design assessments and field measurements. In this position, your primary responsibilities will be to create finite element models of ship structures and use them to perform predictions of structural vibration response to specific and unique machinery and propulsion sources. You will have the opportunity to perform vibration surveys while at sea and dockside for compliance and diagnostic purposes and perform specialized dynamic structural testing such as modal testing, operational deflection characterizations, and modal extraction from operational data.

The position will also require acoustic modeling and analysis to assess and identify noise problems and solutions. You will be required to write reports, interact with clients, and write proposals that are clear, succinct, and effective.

The ideal candidate will have following:

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering, preferably with coursework in vibrations and/or acoustics.
  • 0-3 years of working experience, preferably with exposure to finite element analysis, vibration analysis, vibration testing, and/or marine structures.
  • A fundamental understanding of structural vibration in land-based or marine environments. (Many marine-specific aspects of the work will be taught on the job.)
  • Demonstrated interest and experience with structural vibrations and/or acoustics.
  • Experience with finite element analysis, vibration measurements, modal testing, and related topics is advantageous.
  • Experience or expertise with MATLAB, Python, and/or other computational modeling tools or computer languages is a plus.
  • Proficiency with Word & Excel.

NCE works on ITAR and classified projects. Applicant must be a U.S. citizen in order to comply with the requirements of these projects.

Travel is required throughout the United States and sometimes abroad, and may require a valid driver’s license, current passport, and/or TWIC card.

PhD-position @ MUV, Austria: Voice Quality Characterisation

The Medical University of Vienna (MUV), Austria, seeks to fill a position of a PhD-student within the project “Objective differentiation of dysphonic voice quality types”. The candidate must hold a master’s degree, preferably in (one of) the fields of sound engineering, acoustical engineering, audio signal processing, or similar. The work will be conducted at the Division of Phoniatrics-Logopedics within the Department of Otorhinolaryngology of the MUV.

The workgroup hosting the project is interested in the assessment of voice parameters relevant to the medical diagnosis and clinical care of voice disorders. A focus is given to functional assessment of voice, especially to the objective description of voice quality. The levels of description include kinematics of voice production, voice acoustics, and auditory perception of voice. Clinical studies are conducted with a laryngeal high-speed camera that records vocal fold vibration at 4000 frames per second. Microphone signals of the voice are recorded in parallel. Vibratory patterns of the vocal folds are analysed visually and computationally via modelling. Trajectories of vocal fold edges, spatial arrangements thereof, and glottal area waveforms are analysed. Regarding acoustics, analysis of audio recordings involves the implementation, testing, and training of specialized synthesizers for pathological voices. On the level of auditory perception, listening experiments are conducted, especially experiments involving discrimination tasks.

Mandatory skills of the candidate are MATLAB programming, speech signal processing, psychoacoustics, good knowledge of English, good communication skills, and excellent analytical thinking. Optional skills of the candidate are knowledge of German, experience in a health care profession, image and video processing, Python, PureData, object-oriented programming, software engineering, version control (Subversion, Git, or similar), SQL, and XML.

The project duration is 4-5 years. The Austrian Science Fund (FWF) budgets for doctoral candidates a gross salary of 2.112,40 Euro per month.
