Senior Acoustical Consultant

Adams Associates, Ltd. is seeking a senior acoustical engineer to fill the position of Senior Consultant in our Kailua, Hawaii office.  A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a field of engineering or science with 5+ years of experience in architectural acoustics and environmental noise is required.

Working under the direction of the Principal Consultants, A Senior Consultant conducts field measurements and develops recommendations for room acoustics, airborne and structure-borne sound insulation, and HVAC system noise and vibration control engineering. The Senior Consultant will serve as Project Manager for many of the firm’s projects and be responsible for preparing design documents, writing reports, participating in project design team meetings, coordinating with other design team members concerning acoustical design details, developing acoustical criteria for different types of facilities, and preparing proposals for new work.  A working knowledge of acoustical modeling software such as EASE, Cadna-A, AIM, and TRANE is definite plus.  Experience in the use of sound level instrumentation is essential.  The ideal candidate will maintain client relationships and provide efficient design coordination with owners and other design professionals.  Excellent verbal and written skills are a must and exceptional people skills are essential.

Acoustic Group – Staff-Level Engineer/Scientist

Epsilon Associates, a highly regarded mid-size engineering and environmental consulting firm based in Maynard, MA, is seeking a full-time staff-level engineer or scientist to work as part of the Epsilon team on a wide range of environmental licensing, permitting and compliance projects.  This position will encompass work primarily in the Acoustics Group.

In the Acoustics Group, the successful candidate will assist with community sound level measurement programs, meteorological data collection, data analysis, shadow flicker analyses from wind turbines, modeling, and report preparation.  This position requires regular field work as well as frequent overnight, out-of-state travel.

The ideal candidate will have:

1)     0-3 years of experience in a consulting environment;

2)     Experience in pre-construction permitting for combustion sources and a range of industrial sources, and/or understanding of sound level measurement equipment,

3)     B.S. in Acoustics, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Physics,

4)    Superior written and verbal communication skills; and

5)     Ability to work cooperatively as part of a multidisciplinary project team.

The successful applicant will also have strong organizational skills and good attention to detail.  Expected computer skills include with MS Word and MS Excel.  Experience in the energy industry, wind industry, materials handling business, and with the FHWA TNM model and the Cadna/A model is a plus.

Position Summary:

This position provides engineering support for Steinway & Sons’ Boston and Essex (B&E) piano lines, with particular focus both on piano acoustics and on the mechanical design of piano sub-assemblies.

Main Responsibilities:

  • Analyze string scales.
  • Learn piano scale design principles from theoretical tensional scaling and principles of piano construction to achieve the desired acoustic across the scale
  • Develop test method for mechanically testing various piano components and sub-assemblies, e.g., pinblocks, capstans, etc.
  • Test piano components.
  • Design and build simple electro-mechanical devices for lab use.
  • Study acoustic issues to find opportunities for improvements.
  • Measure and analyze vibrations.
  • Design custom tooling for CMM.
  • Use CMM to measure and analyze downbearing.
  • Use AutoDesk’s Inventor and AutoCAD software for design and analysis.
  • Perform and assume other duties and responsibilities as may be required at the direction of engineering manager 

Qualifications, education and experience:

  • Degree in Acoustics and Engineering  (bachelors or masters)
  • Knowledge of mechanical engineering and product development principles and practice
  • Experience building things out of wood, metal and electronics.
  • 7+ years of proven engineering experience
  • Fluency in use of CAD modeling tools
  • Experience working in cross functional teams; strong team player
  • Strong project management and problem solving skills
  • Computer literate in MS Office products
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work independently with a strong bias toward action and driving results
  • Able to multi-task effectively and to manage and meet multiple deadlines.
  • Preferred: Piano playing ability
  • Preferred: English, Mandarin, Cantonese and German language
  • Strong sense of integrity.
