Tenure-Track Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering The Mechanical Engineering Department in the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture (CETA) at the University of Hartford is seeking to fill multiple needs. Applications are invited for a full-time, tenure-track position at the rank of Assistant Professor beginning August 2018. Candidates must hold an undergraduate degree as well as an earned doctorate in Mechanical Engineering (or a related discipline). ABDs will be considered provided the candidate can document a firm degree completion date. Candidates should have a background and expertise in either one of the following areas:

i. Mechanical design (components, systems, and integrated design), and manufacturing.

ii. Engineering acoustics, vibrations, noise control, and acoustics design.

The Mechanical Engineering Department offers ABET-accredited Bachelor of Science degrees in Mechanical Engineering (including concentrations in acoustics, energy engineering and sustainable design, manufacturing, and turbomachinery); and a unique Interdisciplinary Bachelor of Science in Engineering in Acoustical
Engineering/Music; as well as graduate degrees in Mechanical Engineering.

University of Hartford faculty are expected to excel in teaching and advising students at both undergraduate and graduate levels; engage in independent, collaborative, and/or cross-disciplinary peer-reviewed scholarship through intra-and extramurally funded research; and provide service to the academic and professional community. Depending on the expertise, the successful candidate with the mechanical engineering design background will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in solid mechanics including laboratory courses, mechanical engineering design, elements of machine design, mechanical engineering capstone design, and design for product realization. The successful candidate with the acoustics background will be expected to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in vibrations, acoustics, noise control, acoustics capstone design, as well as mechanics and acoustics design-related courses. Successful candidates will have the opportunity to work in CETA Solid Mechanics/Manufacturing/Metrology and in Acoustics Laboratories, including reverberation and anechoic chambers. There are significant research collaboration opportunities with faculty within CETA as well as across the University. Opportunities for scholarly collaboration also exist through the CETA Engineering Applications Center, which provides students and faculty the opportunity to work with industrial partners to solve real–world problems.

Primary Responsibilities

In the role of Acoustical Specialist 3 (Senior Acoustical Specialist), we’ll count on you to

• Work on, and lead architectural acoustics projects

• Serve as an acoustical and/or vibration specialist conducting analyses to develop design options or recommendations and prepare service deliverable documents

• Perform acoustical (noise/vibration) assignments requiring application of standard and non-standard analysis techniques and procedures

• Complete projects with clear, specified objectives and limited variables

• Work independently on projects or assist more junior acousticians on larger projects

• Give direction to clerical, technical and lower-level professional personnel as needed

• Focus on tasks including acoustical analyses, vibration-related analyses and field testing.

• Perform other related duties as necessary

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Acoustics, Math, Physics or closely related field

• At least 10 years related experience in architectural acoustics

• Leadership skills and ability to work successfully in a team environment

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs

• Strong oral and written communication skills

• Proficiency with REVIT, EASE, INSUL, and Trane Acoustics Program (TAP) or equivalent room acoustics modeling software, sound isolation modeling software, and mechanical noise modeling software

• Proficiency with state-of-the-art with tools used to measure acoustical values, noise, and vibration and software used to process and analyze that measurement data

• Must be familiar with relevant ISO, ANSI, ASTM and related acoustical standards

• Familiar with current guidance documents for architectural acoustical analyses (UFC, LEED, FGI, AISC, etc.)

• Requires occasional travel

• Excellent oral and written communication skills, and the ability to work independently are required

• Must excel at being a member of a team

Preferred Qualifications

• 5+ years of experience performing footfall vibration analyses

• 5+ years of experience performing mechanical noise and vibration analyses

• Proficient with LABVIEW or MATLAB

• Familiar with Larson Davis and NI instrumentation

• Experience with audio system design

• Master’s degree in Acoustics, Math, Physics, or closely related field

Kirkegaard Associates is seeking a consultant with senior-level experience in noise and vibration control, and substantial experience in sound isolation and architectural acoustics. This position will be located in our Chicago office. Responsibilities include:

  • Acoustics design consulting and project management of noise/vibration control, sound isolation and room acoustics projects
  • Supervising and coordinating the work of others and coordinating work with architects, engineers, theater consultants and other disciplines in the built environment
  • Analyzing data and working internally to help solve complex technical challenges and problems
  • Managing project teams for efficient and effective delivery of consulting services

The ideal candidate will have

  • Seven to 10 years relevant experience in acoustics consulting
  • Experience in the measurement and analysis of complex noise and vibration projects
  • A proven track record as a project manager on phased projects from programming through commissioning
  • High-level thinking and visualization skills with an orientation for design and creative problem solving
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present complex issues and problems with clarity
  • A flexible, collaborative approach to work, both within the firm and with members of design teams
  • Substantial experience communicating with general contractors, sub-contractors (HVAC, Electrical, Drywall and Framing) and client project managers during construction administration process including field visits, submittal review and RFI responses.
  • Some experience in business development with the successful preparation of proposals for small to medium-sized projects
  • Proficiency (or ability to readily learn) applications such as REVIT, AutoCAD, Rhino and EASE, CATT, or Odeon; experience with Matlab, Grasshopper and/or Audition desired
  • Experience as a musician, public speaker, or actor
  • Bachelor’s degree in architecture, architectural engineering, physics, a related engineering field or acoustics
  • Master’s degree in architecture, acoustics, physics or mechanical engineering desired.
