Position Description:  Acoustical Consultant/Senior Acoustical Consultant in our Seattle office.

BRC Acoustics & Audiovisual Design, a Seattle based acoustical consulting firm, is seeking a mid-to-senior level acoustical design consultant with the following competencies:

  • Architectural Acoustics (design for Sound Isolation, Reverberant Noise Control).
  • Mechanical Noise Control (including HVAC design to meet background noise design criteria).
  • Sound & AV system design (desired but not required).
  • LEED documentation and calculations, especially LEED for Schools.
  • Environmental Noise Control (including noise measurements and monitoring).
  • Excellent English language written and verbal communication skills.
  • Autocad (Revit is a plus)
  • MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).

The following are required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in an engineering or acoustics-related field.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in acoustical consulting.
  • Minimum of two professional references.

The following are desired but not required:

  • Licensed Professional Engineer.
  • LEED AP.
  • MRI sound & vibration isolation experience.
  • INCE board certification

Acoustics-based Damage Detection from Operational Wind Turbine Blades

The student in this position will develop and test an acoustic sensor network that is needed for damage detection and identification from operational wind turbine blades. This student is expected to have, or motivated to develop, background in acoustics and vibrations, signal processing and machine learning as well as testing and data analysis.
The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in data collection, analysis, and algorithm development. Working knowledge of Matlab/Python, and motivation to learn signal processing, structural health monitoring and machine learning algorithms is preferred. Research Assistantship Opening # 2:
Analytical and Computational Aeroacoustics for Structural Health Monitoring of Operational Wind Turbine Blades
Preferred Start Date: Spring/Summer/Fall 2020
The researcher in this position will develop and use analytical/computational aero-acoustics simulation tools to assess wind turbine blade damage using acoustic measurements/predictions. The computational tools will also be used to optimize the damage detection. Coupled fluid-acoustic and/or high-fidelity predictive tools for aero-acoustics prediction will be considered/developed/used in this research. Analytical and computational modeling will be achieved using tools that will be developed in-house by the student as well as through the use of commercially available tools such as Ansys, Comsol, etc. This student is also expected to help conduct acoustic measurements, analyze and interpret the data collected and help make design decisions related to the acoustic sensing systems. The work is predominantly geared towards wind energy and wind turbine blade structural health monitoring. However, this researcher is expected to continuously learn and help the team with other related work in the near future. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in scientific computing, aerodynamics and/or aero-acoustics, optimization, structural health monitoring, and wind turbine hardware procurement and testing. Working knowledge of Matlab, and motivation to learn other CFD and acoustic modeling tools, and analytical modeling of acoustic sources and acoustic radiation is preferred. Machine Learning based Optimal Sensor Placement for Aerospace Applications

The student in this position is expected to work on developing and testing machine learning algorithms for optimal sensor placement. The algorithms developed will be applied on a variety of applications related to vibrations, acoustics, and other related fields. Matlab/Python will be used to develop supervised and unsupervised machine learning algorithms for damage detection from aerospace structures and related applications using minimum number of optimally-placed sensors. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in machine learning, probabilistic approaches, optimization, structural health monitoring, algorithm development and coding. Research Assistantship Opening #4:
Dynamic Modeling, Analysis and Testing of Automotive Transmission Components and Subsystems

The student in this position will develop analytical and computational tools for vibration/noise modeling and suppression from automotive manual and automatic transmissions. The student will develop a probabilistic dynamic model of a subsystem of a passenger car transmission operating under linear/nonlinear/stochastic dynamic excitations. The ideal candidate will have a strong interest in multibody dynamics, mechanical vibrations of discrete and continuous systems, probabilistic approaches, optimization, and Matlab programming. Experience with computer programming and graphical user interface design is preferred. Acoustic Engineer

Overview

The Acoustic Engineer is responsible for designing and implementing high-performance loudspeakers components and systems.  The role is highly technical, and requires someone who can develop and deliver results to complex and demanding acoustic problems using modern techniques and methods.

Typical responsibilities include design of audio and/or acoustic components, design, development and test of crossover networks and/or enclosures, design and integration of horns/waveguides, acoustic test and validation, and component specification.

The successful candidate will work closely with members of one or more cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineers, electrical and/amplifier engineers, test engineers, supply chain staff, and NPI engineers.  The role requires someone who is self-motivated and possesses excellent communication and problem solving skills, as well as the ability to work effectively in small teams, in addition to requiring excellent acoustic engineering skills.

 

Responsibilities

  • Develop and conduct analysis of audio/acoustic components and systems
  • Design and implement loudspeakers, enclosures, and associated system hardware
  • Build, measure, and evaluate prototypes to demonstrate acoustic designs
  • Identify opportunities for improving acoustic designs and infrastructures
  • Participate and work effectively in cross-functional product development teams
  • Drive internal QSC development effort as well as ODM where required
  • Participate in new technologies research and development

 

Qualifications

  • B.S. degree in Acoustics, Mechanical Engineering, or Electrical Engineering. M.S. preferred.
  • 3-5 years or equivalent experience in loudspeaker systems design and development
  • Passion for sound quality, music and the audio industry is a plus
  • Solid understanding of acoustics
  • Strong analytical and problem solving skills
  • Experience performing multiphysics analysis with FEA simulation such as COMSOL
  • Experience with at least on scientific scripting language such as Matlab
  • Knowledge of at least one acoustical data measurements system such as SoundCheck
  • Knowledge of the Klippel measurement system is a plus
  • Excellent critical listening skills
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and oral
  • Ability to produce results in a dynamic and fast paced product development environment
  • Solid English written, verbal and technical language proficiency
  • Must be self-motivated in order to achieve assigned objectives with minimal supervision
  • Willingness and ability to travel overseas up to 10% of the time, to China as well as other locations
