Within Charcoalblue, the Acoustics team provides design consulting (room acoustic, sound separation, environmental and noise/vibration) for performance venues. Our Americas team spans New York, Chicago, Seattle, and the San Francisco Bay Area.
ROLE OVERVIEW
We are seeking an Acoustic Consulting Intern to join our team for the Summer of 2025.
You will report to one of our Associate Directors who, as your Line Manager, will arrange project assignments and provide ongoing training, professional development opportunities, and day-to-day guidance to help you learn and succeed in this highly specialized field. Charcoalblue will tailor the internship to your individual interests and skills within the field of acoustics consulting.
Although the internship is part of our Acoustics team, you will have the opportunity to gain exposure to the practice of designing performance and live event venues and the various sub-disciplines that Charcoalblue offers.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Your day-to-day responsibilities over the 12-week internship include:
- Conduct room acoustic analysis and calculations to develop and justify design decisions, including computer-based room acoustic modelling, geometric analysis, and processing of measured data.
- Perform sound separation analysis to recommend appropriate construction types and details to meet target performance.
- Analyze and calculate predicted noise levels in building systems and provide design guidance and recommendations to meet target performance.
- Review the drawings and specifications of other consultants and evaluate acoustic performance and adherence to acoustic goals.
- Assist with noise and vibration measurements using specialized equipment and analyze acoustic data collected from field measurements and simulations.
- Develop solutions to design issues using listening, critical thinking, application of knowledge, and visual demonstrations to clients.
- Contribute to project documentation through drawn information, including conceptual diagrams and construction details.
- Assist in the preparation of technical reports, including documenting findings and recommendations.
- Use acoustic modelling software to simulate sound propagation and assess the impact of sound in different environments.
- Visit project sites for inspections, measurements, commissioning, and testing.
- Participate in meetings, design reviews, and coordination sessions with clients and design teams.
EXPECTATIONS & REQUIREMENTS
The internship is hybrid and full-time (forty (40) hours per week), for a total of 12 weeks during the Summer of 2025.
You must be pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree or a recent graduate (2025) in Acoustics or a related field (science, architecture, engineering, music, or related discipline with demonstrated coursework in acoustics).
You should ideally have experience with, or willingness to learn, acoustic modeling software (e.g., Rhino/Grasshopper, AutoCAD, SketchUp, Odeon, Catt-Acoustics, SoundPlan), as well as data processing in Microsoft Excel.
Knowledge, experience, or interest in live performance, music, and broadcast would be a plus.
You must be located in or willing to relocate to a commuting distance of our NYC studio, as regular in-person attendance is expected. The balance between in-person and remote attendance is to be agreed upon with the successful applicant.
The internship may include site visits to active construction sites. PPE (e.g., hard hat, vests) will be provided. Some site visits and/or acoustic testing may fall outside traditional 9-6 pm working hours during the week.
APPLICATION PROCESS
To apply, please complete the online application form and submit a short resume (1-2 pages max.) and a cover letter addressing the questions below:
- What do you know about acoustic consulting, and why are you interested in it?
- Which of your previous experiences and training would you highlight as being particularly relevant to acoustic consulting?
- What do you hope to achieve from your internship?
- Describe your experience with any software tools commonly used in acoustic consulting, such as acoustic modeling software, as well as proficiency in general tools like word processing, spreadsheets, or technical drawing.
We look forward to receiving your application by 6 p.m. ET on Friday, April 4, 2025. Please submit all applications via our online system.
Interviews will be held remotely (via Microsoft Teams) in April 2025 – time and date will be confirmed for shortlisted candidates.

The pay for this role will be $30 per hour. You must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. International students on a J1 or OPT visa are still eligible to apply.
All relevant equipment and software, including a laptop, will be provided for the duration of the internship, but you must have access to a consistent internet connection.
