Guidelines for Web Posting of papers published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA) JASA Express Letters (JASA-EL) or Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics

The Acoustical Society of America (ASA) grants to the author(s) of papers submitted to or published in the Journal of the Acoustical Society of America (JASA), JASA Express Letters (JASA-EL) or Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics (POMA) the right to post and update the article on the Internet with the following specifications.

On the authors' and employers' webpages:

  • There are no format restrictions; files prepared and/or formatted by ASA, AIP, or its vendors (e.g., the PDF, PostScript, or HTML article files published in the online journals and proceedings) may be used for this purpose. If a fee is charged for any use of the posted article, ASA permission must be obtained.
  • An appropriate copyright notice must be included along with the full citation for the published paper and a Web link to ASA's official online version of the abstract.

On free-access E-print servers:

On the National Institutes of Health (NIH) PubMed Central and other funding agency repositories:

  • Authors should notify ASA of any ASA journal articles published after December 20, 2008 that report research funded at least in part by the National Institutes of Health (US). ASA, through the American Institute of Physics, will automatically deposit the article in final published form and associated metadata to PubMed Central (PMC), the NIH's online repository, upon publication. However, the full text of the article will not become available on PMC until one year after publication.
  • Authors should send an email to jas@aip.org and include enough information to clearly identify their article, including journal name, article title, author's name(s), and either the full citation (for published papers) or the AIP ID number (for accepted articles being prepared for publication).
  • Starting in March 2009, authors will be asked to indicate NIH funding of manuscripts at the time of submission on Peer Xpress. Upon acceptance of the article, it will automatically be deposited in final published form and associated metadata to PubMed Central (PMC).
  • For such articles for which the author has paid ASA's fees for open access publication of their JASA Express Letters article, ASA will notify the repository that they may post the Article upon publication by AIP on behalf of ASA and its transmission by AIP to the repository.
  • Authors need not sign any additional Transfer of Copyright Agreement, other than the click-through copyright agreed to in the initial submission of the article to JASA in order to be fully compliant with institutional repository requirements such as those imposed by universities. Our agreement respects the spirit of the initiative toward self-archiving of material and supports the basic premise that authors have freedom to reuse their own work for scholarly, noncommercial purposes.

Format for copyright notices

After publication by ASA, the author is required to post the following copyright notice:

Copyright (year) Acoustical Society of America. This article may be downloaded for personal use only. Any other use requires prior permission of the author and the Acoustical Society of America.

along with the following message:

The following article appeared in (citation of published article) and may be found at (URL/link for published article abstract).

Prior to publication by ASA, the notice should state:

The following article has been submitted to/accepted by [Name of Journal]. After it is published, it will be found at (URL/link to the entry page of the journal. For JASA: http://scitation.aip.org/JASA; for JASA Express Letters: http://scitation.aip.org/JASA-EL; for Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics: http://scitation.aip.org/POMA.

Creating links

To create a link to your article* in JASA or JASA Express Letters you need to know the publication code, the volume number, and the starting page number or citation identifier (article number). For articles published in Proceedings of Meetings on Acoustics (POMA), you need to know the "permalink number, e.g., http://dx.doi.org/10.1121/1.3065475. Note that the permalink number can be found at the bottom of the abstract-view of each article in JASA, JASA Express Letters, and POMA.

The general format for the URL for JASA or JASA Express Letters articles is:

http://link.aip.org/link/?pub/vol/page, where

pub is the 3-letter publication code [JAS is the code for JASA and JASA Express Letters]

vol
is the volume number

page is is the starting page number of the article or the six-character citation identifier (of the form 023103). [Note: for JASA Express Letters articles, this should be followed by "/1"].
