ASA engages and informs members of industry, educational institutions, government agencies, and consumers to recognize important scientific acoustics contributions

Objectives and Completed Actions

1.1   Expand the promotion of ASA activities and resources through emerging media and online content

  • Succesful hiring of Educational and Outreach Coordiator
  • New logo for Explore Sound web site via contest 
  • Creating Video Challenge for Explore Sound web site
  • Participated in ComSciCon
  • Completed new Acoustics Program Directory 
  • Formed Web Advisory Committee
    Created standards for all web properties
    Created template with those standards and "starter" paackage for all new web sites
    Creating newly designed acousticalsociety.org web site, in concert with rebranding initiative, for O&M and EC review in '17
  • Participate in the International Noise Awareness Day

1.2   Increase awareness and dissemination of ASA Standards

  • Program to create and provide an ASA Standards terminology database and make it available to anyone looking to determine the official acoustical definition of any term from ANSI/ASA S2.1 or ANSI/ASA S3.20.
  • Improve and update the ASA Standards booth display at the ASA meetings by including updated graphics and fresh materials on member benefits and “standards in action.”
  • Program to provide 5 free standards to all ASA members annually.

1.3   Improve the image of the ASA through a strategic branding initiative

  • Branding intiative approved, funded and launched
  • DJG Agency hired. Preparing, new logo and "rollout" plans for approval at O&M and EC in '17

1.4   Advance cyber presence via web and social media development

  • Expanded You Tube Channel
  • HQ and Web Office now administering all Social Media efforts
  • Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter activity increased by 38% across the board
  • Twitter hash tags now integrated and expected at all ASA meetings

Action #1: work with Search Committee for Education Coordinator to revise job description.

Action complete.

Action #2: Contest for Explore Sound logo.

Action #3: Accelerate implementation of online presence (e.g., interactive noise budget tool, commuting) through additional web developer support.

Background: $30K has been allocated to improve the ASA website and expand the “Explore Sound” website

      

Progress:

     

Working on guidelines through the Web Advisory Committee to standardize all 50 TC, SC and Admin websites.

     

Once completed websites will be updated and funds will be used.

      

Status: Funding not yet utilized but available once guidelines are determined  Action ongoing.

 

Action #4: Investigate possibility of coordinated outreach activities with National Park Services (400 million visitors/year) to promote acoustics.

Background: A subcommittee will discuss possible ways that NPS and ASA can collaborate

Progress:  For various unanticipated reasons, no progress has been made but it is hoped that work on this action will proceed shortly.

Action #5: Drop "My ASA" Portal concept

Action complete.

Action #6: Investigate potential for ASA involvement with MOOCs (massively open online courses) and online education.

Background Gathering information about

Progress:

     

Michael Vorlander has requested ASA publicize his MOOC on Communication Acoustics.  This may be the proper response to identify andpromote acoustics MOOCs from universities.

Action #7: Recommend seed funding to the ICA (International Commission for Acoustics) to support their initiative to have 2019 declared an International Year of Sound.

Action complete.

Action #8: Review the outreach video produced by the Public Relations Committee.

Action complete.

Action #9: Determine how ASA can participate in the International Noise Awareness Day.

Background:  The International Noise Awareness Day occurs every April and is spearheaded by the Center of Hearing and Communication (CHC). This organization will be contacted to see how ASA can participate.

Action #10: Define a methodology to implement nationwide soundscape data collection

      

Champions: Brigette Schulte-Fortkamp, Andrew Morrison

      

Background:   A recent study by Feibig et al. reported data collection through citizen participation of noise soundscapes across Germany. Brigitte Schulte-Fortkamp would like feedback on the model used, to define a methodology that can be provided to other countries.

Action #11: Explore possibilities of a curated YouTube channel

Background:  YouTube is being used for education and outreach purposes. Is there a role for the Acoustical Society?

Action #12: Investigate means of achieving outreach to government agencies

Background: Most of our efforts address the general public. It is not clear how to promote acoustics to government agencies. Plan to approach AIP to see if they can provide guidance.

Background:  ASA will host an educational website entitled Explore Sound

      

Progress

     

Andy Piacsek is preparing an NSF-ITEST proposal to create a musical acoustics course online that would be part of the ?Virtual School. He wishes to include ASA as a partner in this application. ASA would host the resulting education material on its Explore Sound website. There would be no direct funds involved.

     

Explore Sound will host archived lectures from Architectural Acoustics complied by Carl Rosenberg

Action #13: Participate in AIP Venture Fund

      

Champion: David Woolworth

      

Background: AIP has a fund of $100,000 pre annum for outreach in member societies

     

Expected size of proposals : $20-40K

      

Progress: David proposed a $23,850 project for hands-on outreach to students from grades 3-9 at the New Orleans meeting

Objectives

1.1   Expand the promotion of ASA activities and resources through emerging media and online content

1.2   Increase awareness and dissemination of ASA Standards

1.3   Improve the image of the ASA through a strategic branding initiative

1.4   Advance cyber presence via ASA portal, web, and social media development

 

Strategies for objective 1.1

1               Hire staff or contract out to manage and oversee online presence

2               Track and promote social media and internet presence

3               Online portal – My ASA – individualized for each member

o   develop job description for webmaster that includes portal development with timeline

4               Utilize methods of outreach, webinars and Continuing Education Units

o   pilot Go To Webinar at Jacksonville 2015 ASA meeting

5               Leverage awareness of acoustics to recruit authors

6               Develop new fundraising mechanisms, such as DONATE NOW button, or Facebook Button to raise $$$

7               Broadcast ASA deadlines using a digital calendar subscription

Outcome of inaugural meeting of Task Force on Goal 1 Awareness of Acoustics

 

Action #1: work with Search Committee for Education Coordinator to revise job description.

Want job description to include (a) title Education and Outreach Coordinator, (b) experience creating content and curriculum, (c) live web presence skills, (d) need not be local to Melville.

Action #2: Contest for Explore Sound logo.

An open competition to have a logo for Explore Sound developed. Need to define logo requirements, judging procedure (e.g., committee culls down to 10 designs, then final online ASA vote). Award 1st ($1000), 2nd ($500), 3rd ($250).

Action #3: Accelerate implementation of online presence (e.g., interactive noise budget tool, commuting) through additional web developer support.

Dan Farrell is doing a great job but is in high demand. To avoid delays in implementation of online strategies, recommend web developer assistant be contracted.
