The Building Science & Technology Commercialization group in the Corporate Innovation Center has two distinct objectives:   One is to leverage building science, fire, acoustics, and building codes / standards expertise to support USG’s sales and marketing efforts.   Second is to generate, shape, and drive transformational ideas to commercialization. 

As part of the team, the Principal Researcher (Acoustics) will maintain and enhance USG’s leadership in architectural acoustics.   He / She will provide thought leadership on USG’s portfolio of acoustic products & assemblies, actively represent USG’s interests in codes and standards organizations, and engage with outside partners to utilize sophisticated models to build a scientific basis for current and future systems.      

The Principal Researcher (Acoustics) will develop and conduct complex projects and will provide significant technical input to cross functional teams in the area of Acoustics.  With sustained excellent performance, the candidate can grow to become USG’s pre-eminent expert in acoustics.  The position is intended for experienced professionals with a track record of significant contributions.

This position requires the ability to travel as needed, up to 15% of the time.


  • Based on a thorough understanding of USG’s and competitive offerings for walls, ceilings, and floors, provide thought leadership for development of next generation of products and systems that will deliver step changes in room acoustics for commercial and residential applications.
  • Develop and present training programs for architects, interior designers, and USG’s architectural representatives to advance USG’s leadership in the marketplace.
  • Represent and advance USG’s interests in codes and standards organizations such as Acoustical Society of America, ASTM International, Gypsum Association, and International Code Council (ICC).   



Required Skills

  • Passion to learn and grow in the architectural acoustics arena.
  • Self-starter with good organizational and project management skills; able to quickly analyze and arrive at optimal path forward
  • Familiar with construction and US/Canada building practices – through direct/indirect involvement or previous work experience
  • Willingness to serve in and eventually lead codes and standards committees
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Applications
  • Strong oral and written communication skills

Preferred Skills 

  • Consulting experience in Architectural acoustics.
  • Strong building products knowledge


  • Master’s Degree in Acoustics Science, or similar relevant field.   Bachelor’s degree will be considered with considerable experience in the consulting field.

  • None

Years of Experience

  • Minimum 5- 7 years’ experience with architectural acoustics.   Additional experience will be a plus.
