The Division of Sleep and Chronobiology in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania will be conducting an FAA-funded study on the effects of aircraft noise on sleep around multiple U.S. airports. We are seeking a talented and motivated postdoctoral fellow to join our multi-disciplinary team of MDs, psychologists, neuroscientists, and statisticians lead by Dr. Mathias Basner and Dr. David Dinges.

The main tasks of the post-doctoral fellow will be to analyze acoustical data, combine air traffic data provided by the FAA with acoustical data, and analyze complex physiological signals (including heart rate, body movements, and EEG). The main focus will be on the FAA study, but similar physiological data are currently being gathered in NASA-funded studies on the International Space Station (ISS), in space analog environments (e.g., Antarctica), and in short-term spaceflight simulations in the Isolation, Confinement, Analog Research Unit for Spaceflight (ICARUS) at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania.

The successful applicant should:

  • hold a PhD in Physics, Engineering, or equivalent;
  • be familiar with the recording and analysis of acoustical data (including spectral analyses and filtering);
  • have programming skills in the relevant software packages (e.g., in MatLAB, Python, and/or R);
  • be familiar with statistical modeling (e.g., linear and non-linear mixed effect modeling);
  • have an interest in being part of a multidisciplinary team of scientists conducting high priority federally-funded research.
